The Power of Reputation

“It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.”

Wise words from the American writer, printer, political philosopher, politician, Freemason, postmaster, scientist, inventor, humorist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat Benjamin Franklin. Talk about having a portfolio career! 

But Franklin was certainly onto something vital with this observation – pointing out the fragility of reputation and the difficulty of building a strong one without many good deeds to support it.

On that note, Sing Education set out to assess our own reputation among the clients, communities and stakeholders we serve. Recently we surveyed headteachers and staff members across our network of partner schools to capture their perceptions about our curriculum, teaching method, staff placements and customer service. We were delighted to uncover a number of 

First, all those who responded to the survey indicated that they believed our service was high quality. Similarly, many said they felt the service was inclusive and educational. All of the respondents affirmed that as a team Sing Education is extremely responsive to questions and/or concerns. Some direct quotes from the survey included “We’re very happy with Sing Education and the provision, support and staff;” while others said, “We would like to clone our teacher and have her all over our school.” 

We also receive regular feedback through more informal channels such as email. In recent days, we’ve received messages from headteachers saying they’re “[i]n awe of the Sing Education teacher’s behavior management strategies;” with others noting they were “[h]appy with how singing assemblies had been planned and how they link up well with the new Ofsted framework which focuses on providing a broader curriculum.”

A Note on Metrics

In addition to qualitative questions designed to help us understand the quality dimensions of existing provision, Sing Education also asked our partners to look into the future, specifically querying “How likely is it that you would recommend our company/product/service to a friend or colleague?” 

We achieved a Net Promoter score of 100.

If you’re not familiar, Net Promoter Score (NPS) is a management tool that can be used to gauge the loyalty of a firm’s customer relationships. The tool aims to measure the loyalty that exists between a provider and a consumer. The scoring for this answer is most often based on a 0 to 10 scale.

Those who respond with a score of 9 to 10 are called Promoters, and are considered likely to exhibit value-creating behaviors, such as buying more, remaining customers for longer, and making more positive referrals to other potential customers. 

An NPS can be as low as −100 (every respondent is a “detractor”) or as high as +100 (every respondent is a “promoter”). NPS scores vary across different industries, but a positive NPS (i.e., one that is higher than zero) is generally deemed good, a NPS of +50 is generally deemed excellent, and anything over +70 is exceptional.
