Make Your School’s Music Program a Smash Hit!

We believe music should be a central, pulsating part of your school’s culture, not just a subject tucked away on the timetable. So, is your music program a chart-topper, or could it use a remix to get everyone’s toes tapping?

Is Your School's Music Program a Hit? (Let's Make it a Smash Hit!)

At Sing Education, we’re not just about hitting the right notes; we’re about creating a vibrant, musical heartbeat in schools. We believe music should be a central, pulsating part of your school’s culture, not just a subject tucked away on the timetable. So, is your music program a chart-topper, or could it use a remix to get everyone’s toes tapping?

The National Plan for Music Education: the ultimate playbook for music in schools.

The National Plan for Music Education (NPME) is like the ultimate playbook for music in schools. It envisions a world where all children have the chance to sing, play instruments, and create music together, and to take their musical journey as far as they dream. This ambitious plan is built around three key goals: ensuring high-quality music education for all children, making sure music educators work in partnership with children’s needs at the heart of their work, and creating opportunities for children and young people to progress their musical talents as far as their passion takes them. The question is, is your school following the NPME’s lead?

The NPME champions a robust music curriculum, ideally delivered by a specialist music teacher, for at least one hour per week for Key Stages 1 to 3. But let’s be real, a fantastic music program needs more than just curriculum time. It’s about the whole package – how everything connects to create a school-wide musical buzz. It’s about getting every student involved, making music a way of life, not just a lesson or a once-a-year concert. It’s about building skills, creating memories, and inspiring a lifelong love of music.

So, how is your school doing? Is it hitting the right notes with the NPME and your own Music Development Plan? Let’s check the score:

  • Curriculum Integration: Is music integrated with other subjects, making learning more vibrant and engaging? Are your students exploring their voices, jamming on instruments, and composing their own tunes? Is your curriculum diverse and dynamic?
  • Rich Co-curricular: Do you have a rich variety of co-curricular activities like choirs, bands, and music clubs? Are these opportunities accessible to all students, regardless of their backgrounds or abilities?
  • Performance Power: Are there regular performance opportunities for your students to show off their musical chops and build their confidence? Are you providing chances for students to enjoy live music at least once a year?
  • Inclusive: Is your music program inclusive and accessible to all students, including those with SEND? Are you removing barriers so every child can find their musical voice?
  • Teacher Training: Are your teachers getting the training and support they need to keep their musical skills sharp? Are you helping them to nurture the pupils’ creativity?
  • Community Collaboration: Does your music program reach out to parents, families, and the wider community, inviting them to join the musical fun? Are you building connections with local music hubs and professionals?
  • Music Development: Do you have a clearly articulated Music Development Plan that outlines all your musical activities and how it all fits together…? Does it detail how music is taught and funded, and what’s your long-term vision for music…?

Making Your Music Development Plan Sing

Your school’s Music Development Plan should act as your very own musical blueprint. It needs to demonstrate how you’ll deliver an outstanding music program and how it aligns with your school’s wider vision. Crucially, it should include key elements of high-quality music provision, such as timetabled curriculum music, access to a range of instrumental lessons, a school choir, an ensemble, and regular performance opportunities for students.

At Sing Education, we believe that every child has a voice, and that singing is our primary instrument. We’re all about making music fun, active, and full of positive energy, with a focus on well-being and behaviour management. We’re here to support your school with our amazing specialist music teachers, providing a complete service from curriculum design to PPA cover to SEND inclusion.
