Instrumental Day-in-the-Life

What’s it like to be a Sing Education instrumental music teacher?

School hours are typically 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.. As such, your day is made up of 30-minute, or less frequently 20-minute, teaching sessions. The lessons are all done within the regular school day on the school site. Ideally they take place in a dedicated music room but at times a quiet hallway or assembly room is at your disposal. Some lessons are organised for small groups of up to six pupils and others are structured as one-to-one tuition. And like all Sing Education teaching, you can expect high-energy active music making to be at the core.

You are responsible for collecting pupils from their classrooms, ensuring that they are in attendance at their lesson and communicating regularly with school office staff and class teachers to ensure smooth delivery of the instrumental timetable. As such you work closely alongside the Sing Education directors to manage the schoolwide music timetable, as well as with your classroom music counterpart to oversee the delivery of the broader music curriculum.

Our staff typically teach a variety of instruments – you’ll naturally lean heavily into your academic training, specialisms and professional musicianship. For example, it may be that you largely teach your primary instrument but supplement that with one or two secondary instruments, such as keyboard or ukulele. Currently Sing Education offer instrumental lessons in keyboard, ukulele, guitar for key stage two pupils, singing, violin, recorder and flute. We don’t offer all instruments in all schools and we tailor our offering to meet the schools’ request and to match the teaching skills we have available at any given time.

A close-up view captures the detailed artistry of a violinist in action, with a focus on the fingers deftly pressing the strings and the bow elegantly gliding across, creating a sense of the music's movement and the musician's skillful expression.

Why Become an Instrumental Teacher?

At Sing Education, we know the music provision we deliver is of the highest calibre and we attribute that directly to our recruitment, training and resourcing standards.

When you join us as an instrumental music teacher, you have not only training but access to our full bank of learning resources. These materials are tried and tested, and ever growing, ever developing. Plus you receive ongoing support and development from the senior leadership team and a team of peer teachers. This means that at Sing Education you become part of a team of passionate, like-minded teaching musicians.

Being part of a wider team means never feeling like you’re the only music person in your school with no one else for support, collaboration or camaraderie. In addition, your Sing Education team meets regularly outside of school, communicating all the time via dedicated online apps. Plus the directors reach out as well to speak with you, support you, develop you.

And if it’s variety and novelty you crave, with Sing Education you can work a varied teaching week, but still have the enormous benefit of using the same teaching style and resources across all your placement settings. So, rather than working across lots of different locations and having to do several different types of planning and preparation each week, you can train with us, access a unified and proven set of teaching resources, be developed as a working musical professional and still be able to embrace the diverse values, demographics and creative energies present across a number of school environments.
